In a Facebook post on September 20, 2022, Shari Hanson announced that, after 11 years, Scales would be closing permanently.

"It is with a very heavy heart that I have had to make the decision to close Scales permanently," she wrote, adding "I also have to thank my children and family... you've been my rock and had to live through the restaurant lifestyle, I know it hasn't always been easy and I love you even more for that."

Randy & Karen Mogren opened Scales in 1999 at the rehabilitated Hawkes Mill on River Street, and Hanson took over a little over a decade ago. The restaurant was host to countless local meetups and became a seafood staple in Millbury, especially following the closure of Millbury Fish and Chips. The spot also received its share of media attention over the years, including a visit from Phantom Gourmet in 2014, and was available for takeout during the pandemic.

According to comments on Facebook, the final day at Scales was Sunday the 18th. Hanson closed her post on a positive note: "It's time to close this chapter and get on to the next...I wish you all the best!!!"
